Quality assessment of volunteered geographic information for outdoor activities: an analysis of OpenStreetMap data for names of peaks in Japan

Geographical studies of outdoor activities have increased in recent years with the rise popularity these worldwide, including Japan. Volunteered geographic information (VGI) is a key tool for organizing as it offers means to determine locational and names places. To evaluate quality VGI, geospatial data generated by land survey agencies other VGI are often utilized reference data. However, since may not be available, methods necessary assure VGI. In this study, we examined five trust indicators based on inherent characteristics through an empirical case study. We used mountain extracted from OpenStreetMap Japan because there were almost no vicinity. As result, isolated three indicators, namely versions, users, tag corrections, examine thematic accuracy only statistically significant indicators. found that prediction rate was very low. improve accuracy, study recommends using most accurate applying correctly given tags, considering motivations contributors.
